The Coastal South Carolina Chapter covers a tri-county area encompassing Georgetown, Horry and Williamsburg counties. This is a 3,000-square-mile coverage territory with a growing population of more than 360,000.
The chapter is a combination of two previous chapters that merged in 2005 to better serve the community. The Horry County Chapter and the Georgetown County Chapter were both chartered in October 1917. Since the inception of the local chapters, residents have been provided with Red Cross programs constituting hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars worth of skilled volunteer service.
The local Red Cross has responded to many local disasters including Hurricane Hugo that struck Sept. 10, 1989, provided services to evacuees from Hurricane Katrina that devastated the Gulf Coast in August 2005, and hundreds of house fires that affect local families annually.
On April 14, 2006, Williamsburg County was fully annexed into the chapter jurisdiction. The chapter relies on volunteers to help provide the much needed services to the community.
